Buttons are not just for
fastening clothes, but also embellish them and fulfill a wide range
of adornment needs. Basically, the button
(กระดุม)
is made up of plastic or seashell to secure two pieces of fabric
together. We are well aware of the primary utility of buttons
including jeans, skirts, shirts, etc. Sometimes, designer
buttons are merely attached to add grace to the piece of clothing. A
wide variety of natural materials used for manufacturing buttons
include shell, ivory, vegetable ivory, bone, synthetics as celluloid,
glass bakelite, metal, plastic,
etc.
There are two types of
buttons, depending on how they are attached to the piece of material:
- Sew-through:
These
are the ones which generally have two or four holes in them and a
thread is passed through the holes to stitch the button
in place, either by hand or using a sewing machine.
- Shaft button:
These
buttons contain
a connector at the back that is attached to the material using
thread. It offers great benefits of ornamentation.
- Chinese ball button:
It is a special kind of
button (กระดุม)
that can be elaborated as a knot made-up of the cord, where both
loops and holes may be found in sets or singly, and the loop extends
above the end of the fabric.
There
are four types of buttons, based on the material used to manufacture
them:
- Wood and Leather buttons:
Wood buttons are used in
sewing and craft projects. These are generally robust and comes in a
variety of shapes (squares, circles, hearts). It can also be adorned
with different designs and textures. These are of exclusive quality
and Eco-friendly.
- Metal buttons:
These
can be found on every clothing like suits, jeans, shirts etc. Metal
buttons are appreciated for their uniqueness and can be customized as
per the requirements. These are easy to attach as plastic buttons.
- Plastic buttons:
It
is the most widely used button,
and comes in a variety of shapes, color, sizes and texture. These can
be easily attached using thread and needle, also can be used in craft
projects.
- Pearl/Shell buttons:
These
buttons are expensive as compared to others and are commonly used for
scrap booking and vintage sewing projects.
Some buttons are forged
according to the item they depict to give realistic appearance, while
others may have the design stamped, painted or engraved on the
surface of the normally shaped button (กระดุม).
